Das Fischmarkt (The Fish Market)

When: Every Sunday Morning

          Summer: 5:00-9:30am

          Winter: 7:00- 9:30am

Where: On the bank of the Elbe River Between Hafenstraße and Groß Elbstrasße

(Reeperbahn S-Bahn Station)

What: Whether you are stumbling in from the Reeperbahn, or getting up bright and early, the Fischmarkt is for anyone and everyone, regardless of Blood Alcohol Content. One of the oldest markets of its kind, you can find any type of fish sandwich, all sorts of other fresh seafood, and other trinkets and crafts. Beer is also served this early, and there is often live music coming from the large brick building that is hard to miss. Although it takes training to survive all night partying on the Reeperbahn and make it to the Fischmarkt, everyone needs to do it once! But be ready, you won’t get much done on Sunday after.

Soccer Public Viewing

When: During the World Cup or Euro Cup that happen every two years

Where: Heiligengeistfeld, St. Pauli (Near the St. Pauli and Feldstraße U-Bahn Stations)

What: Imagine thousands of Germans chanting “Auf gehts los, jetzt schiess ein Tor!” and cheering as the German National Soccer Team dominates the competition on the huge jumbo-tron! Heiligengeistfeld, the location of the public viewing of big national soccer matches, has an atmosphere that is indescribable! Decorated in black, red, and gold, fans from Hamburg, as well as the surrounding areas, gather to cheer on their country. I only wish there was one sport that all Americans could love as much as the Germans love their soccer. For 90 minutes, the whole country is watching and cheering together! If you happen to be in the country during a large tournament like the Euro or World Cups, find a public viewing. You won’t be disappointed.

Gelato in the Alsterpavillion

What: When the weather finally takes a turn for the better, and the sun peeks out behind the clouds, there is nothing the Germans love more than enjoying a few scoops of Gelato in the Alsterpavillion. One scoop is only about 1.10 Euro, and you will see a mix of everything from business men and women to young families to punk teenagers.

My Passion for Travel

Enjoy my stories?

Some call it destiny, others call it coincidence, I like to call it fate. My passion for travel has propelled me in directions I never would have known without it. It is the basis of many of my friendships, the inspiration for my career goals and it has completely altered my outlook on life. G.K. Chesterton once said, "The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land;  it is at last to set food on one's own country as a foreign land." Since 16, I made a promise: to not let the rest of the world, outside my own US borders, go unnoticed, and to become a true citizen of the world. Since then, I travel not to escape life, but to ensure that life will not escape me.
